Great mentors, spiritual teachers, and healers all know something. They know that each person has within them all the answers to all their questions. It is not the teacher’s role to provide the answers, but rather to help the student find the answers within him/herself.
Each of us has an inner knowing, an inner self that is our connection to All That Is (whatever you call it). It is our infinite self, our most true self, our small piece of the All, and it knows, really knows, what is best for us. And only it knows. No other person will know FOR you. You, and only you, can know what is best for you.
Sometimes when others give us advice or feedback, we may choose to follow it because it sounds right to us, because it resonates with our inner knowing. But in the end, it is because it felt right to you that you are following it, not because someone else recommended it.
Galileo said, “You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him to find it within himself.” And this is a core truth that all good mentors, teachers and healers follow — for they recognize the greatness within you, the wondrous nature of you, and that you are just as magnificent as they are.
They also recognize that deep within you, you already know everything there is to know. So teaching is really just the act of helping you to remember, to reconnect, to access what you already know somewhere deep inside.
The Eagles sang, “So often times it happens, we all live our life in chains, and we never even know we have the key.” YOU have the key to all your needs; YOU have the answers to all your questions; YOU know what is best for you. You only need to learn how to access all that knowledge, and then to trust it.
One way to begin to do this is by checking to see how you feel when people make recommendations to you or give you advice. Go within to see what that feels like to you…does it feel right or off track? Begin to trust that sense that you have, and when it proves itself reliable, place all your trust in it.
Take these steps and you will come to really know and trust in that inner self, that inner voice, that internal GPS of yours. And then you will be able to access the answers to your questions, to know what’s right for you, to sense what’s next for you, to have a feel for which way to go, and you’ll be able to really trust your knowing.

So true, but often it takes most of us a long while to be able to trust in ourselves 🙂
I agree, this can take time. But if we notice those times when we do listen to that inner voice and we see how things worked out for the best in the long run, then we can hasten this process a bit. By noticing how that inner voice guides us so well, we learn to trust it a bit sooner. Thanks for commenting. Elise
