I’m sure you’re probably saying, ‘huh?’ — so let me explain. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. Our personality and human characteristics are like clothing on our spiritual selves — providing each of us with a unique way of navigating through this earthly realm.
If you focus too much on your human qualities like your ego, personality, or opinions, then you are confusing YOU with your human clothes. When this happens, “you risk getting lost in your clothes, and forgetting who you really are.” (Bill Bauman)
When I first read this quote by Bill, I found myself laughing at the picture it created for me…it’s a great way to help us remember to stay centered in our core, our essence, and see the drama and humanness of our lives in the proper perspective.
YOU are not your human clothing — you are much deeper, vaster and more expansive than any human form could convey. When you stay clear about who you really are and live from your higher self (your essence), life flows and you can remain in a happy and peaceful state.
But when you lose sight of who you really are, and find yourself adrift in the human scene, focusing on all the daily minutiae as if it were what was important, then you find yourself frustrated, confused and sometimes overwhelmed by life — you get lost in your clothes.
When this happens, take a moment and step back from the busyness of your life and remember who you really are, remember your inner self, your bigness, your essence, your spirit. And when you can shift your perspective back to your true nature, life becomes manageable, less dire, more fun.
The next time you feel like your life is getting chaotic and crazy, stop for a moment and remember the humorous image of you all knotted up in your human clothes. It just might make you laugh, and help you to step back and regroup…to recall who you REALLY are and to live from that vastness once again.
