What do I listen to — my soul or my mind?

For many who learn to discern the difference between their soul’s knowing (internal GPS) and their mind’s voice (ego), the next thing to come up is:  how do I know when to listen to whom?

I’m not advocating destroying the ego because it has a valuable purpose (when used properly).  So then, how do you use these two internal aspects to direct your life?

The best analogy I’ve come up with is to consider that your soul (internal GPS) is like the CEO/Visionary.  It’s job is to have the big picture, the ‘above the forest’ view, the long-range vision, and to keep you on your path (even when it meanders and curves).  So it sets the direction, determines the purpose and focus, and inspires you.

The ego’s job on the other hand, is to be the General Manager (GM).  It takes direction and guidance from the CEO.  Once the ego has been given the assignment, it carries it out, managing all the details, logistics, etc.  The ego (mind) is very good at the how-to’s of execution.

However, if at any time a decision needs to be made as to a slight change in course, modification of the original plan, etc., then the ego needs to look to the soul (internal GPS) for a new vision.

Imagining them as CEO and GM really helps to understand how they work together, each with their own role.

The only time we get ourselves in trouble is when we allow the GM (ego or mind) to redirect the path or alter the vision — for that is the CEO’s (internal GPS’) job.

For those of you who may not have a business background, another analogy is a ship’s navigator and a ship’s helmsman.  The navigator (internal GPS) plots the course, while the helmsman (mind or ego) executes by sailing that specified course.  The helmsman is not authorized to deviate from that course without checking with the navigator first.

So how can you apply this in your daily life?  The next time you need to make a decision, check in with your inner knowing (your internal GPS, soul, inner voice) for guidance and direction.  Once you are clear on the direction, then turn the execution of it over to your mind/ego.  It is a master of details and tactics, and will ensure that you stay on track.  It will solve problems, overcome hurdles and ensure you get to the desired destination.

Try this and let me know how it goes…
