Note from Elise: While I’m traveling for two weeks, I have invited several guests to post their thoughts for you. I think you’ll enjoy their ideas and unique voices. At the end of each post, you can read a brief bio about the guest author. Enjoy!

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, and confusion into clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, and a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
~ Melody Beatie
After reading the above quote, you could think that the author of it is stretching things a bit. How could a small thing like gratitude perform so many miracles? Isn’t that just “fairytale” thinking? Not so in my experience.
For at least a decade or more, I have been tracking my ups and downs as they relate to when I am feeling abundant and happy versus needy and discontented. I have proven to myself that the antidote for feeling unhappy is absolutely to shift my attention/awareness from “not enough” thinking to observing all that I have to be thankful for.
I confess that I don’t live with gratitude on my mind all the time. I can slip into believing in my hopes and dreams, and when they don’t turn out how I pictured, I fall into a pothole on my path.
The important learning for me has come as a result of noticing my dissatisfaction and remembering to pick myself up by consciously noticing and feeling gratitude for all the love and well-being in my life.
So what if my expectations haven’t been met this time? I know I can renew and unlock the fullness of my life through practicing the habit of being grateful.
It works because in every moment we have so much to be thankful for that when we take our focus from the one thing that didn’t pan out, dozens of other wonderful aspects of our life then appear in our awareness.
Try it for yourself the next time your life hits a pothole.
